Jose Mourinho finds himself at a crossroads following his departure from Roma as speculation abounds regarding his next managerial move. The ‘Special One’ is reportedly considering a range of options, including a potential switch to the Saudi Pro League or taking up the challenge of reviving Newcastle, which has faced recent struggles under Eddie Howe.
Interestingly, Mourinho’s managerial ambitions extend beyond the conventional European football landscape. In a revealing interview with the late Grant Wahl for Sports Illustrated in 2011, the then-Real Madrid boss expressed a keen interest in managing in the United States. “I see myself coaching a [club] team, coaching the national team or helping develop soccer in the US,” Mourinho said, highlighting his long-standing fascination with the American soccer landscape. “When I’m tired of winning things in Europe, it’s something I want to do. I want to coach the Portuguese national team, and I want to work in the United States.”
Mourinho’s admiration for the United States wasn’t limited to its soccer potential; he also spoke fondly of the country itself. “I love it. The people have a very open mentality. Everybody is the same. Status doesn’t count a lot. I like it very much in this way,” he remarked during the same interview, showcasing his appreciation for the American culture.
Fast forward more than 12 years, and the MLS is now emerging as a plausible destination for Mourinho. Journalist Mark Ogden has suggested that both Los Angeles-based clubs, LA Galaxy and LA FC, could be potential landing spots for the Portuguese tactician. Ogden, drawing from his experience covering Manchester United and spending time in the US with them, noted Mourinho’s affinity for Los Angeles. “Jose loved being in LA, so Jose Mourinho for MLS might actually be a thing if either of the LA clubs were to be ambitious enough to say ‘Jose, would you come to MLS?’ I think it would be something he would consider,” he stated on ESPN.
The prospect of Mourinho in the MLS, particularly in the vibrant city of Los Angeles, adds an intriguing layer to his managerial journey. Ogden emphasized Mourinho’s love for the celebrity aspect, making it a potentially enticing proposition. “If he goes to MLS, he would be box office news and front-page news, and he would love that,” Ogden added.
While Mourinho has achieved considerable success in European club football, winning major trophies with Real Madrid, Chelsea, Manchester United, and Roma, it appears that he is seeking a fresh challenge. Ogden suggests that the MLS, with its unique appeal and potential for a new kind of challenge, could be the ideal next step for Mourinho, especially given the lack of significant challenges left for him in European club football. As he contemplates his next move, the football world awaits Mourinho’s decision on where he’ll continue his storied managerial career.
