Novak Djokovic’s attempt to defend his Australian Open title ended in a surprising four set loss to Jannik Sinner in the semi-finals. Djokovic had been unbeaten in Melbourne since 2018 but Sinner’s remarkable 6-1, 6-2, 6-7, 6-3 victory marked his first grand slam final appearance. Despite Djokovic’s bid for a 25th grand slam title, Sinner’s dominance in the match particularly in the first two sets, proved too much for the 36-year-old Serbian.
Although Djokovic showed resilience by winning the third set, Sinner maintained his composure and secured the win. Meanwhile, in the other semi-final, Daniil Medvedev and Alexander Zverev faced each other in a grand slam match for the first time. Zverev, amidst off-court controversy aimed to reach his first Australian Open final, while Medvedev advanced after a five-set battle against Hubert Hurkacz.
