Australia’s selectors have chosen Steve Smith as the replacement for David Warner at the top of the batting order in the upcoming two-Test series against West Indies. The 13-man squad, announced ahead of the first Test in Adelaide on January 17, includes all-rounder Cameron Green at No. 4. Matt Renshaw and Scott Boland have been added to the squad as backup players.
Chief selector George Bailey stated that the decision to have Steve Smith open the batting and Cameron Green at No. 4 was based on the desire to field the best six batters in the country. Despite candidates like Renshaw, Marcus Harris, and Cameron Bancroft, selectors see Green as a generational talent who also provides a genuine fifth fast-bowling option.
Bailey explained that the batting order’s current functionality led them to believe that Green might find it challenging to get Test cricket exposure in the next 12 months if not included. Steve Smith, motivated and energized, is reportedly keen on the challenge of opening.
While there is a possibility of Smith moving back down the order, Bailey mentioned that discussions with Smith included the player’s willingness to make this move a significant chapter in his career. Australia’s captain, Pat Cummins, initially expressed concerns about disrupting the batting order but officials believe the decision can motivate Smith and potentially prolong his Test career.
Cameron Green’s return to the team follows his exclusion during the Ashes last year when Mitch Marsh scored a century while filling in for him at Headingley. The squad for the West Indies Test series remains largely unchanged from the one that beat Pakistan 3-0 at the beginning of the Test summer.
Australia’s squad for the West Indies Test series: Pat Cummins (capt), Scott Boland, Alex Carey, Cameron Green, Josh Hazlewood, Travis Head, Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne, Nathan Lyon, Mitch Marsh, Matt Renshaw, Steve Smith, Mitchell Starc.
