South Korean footballer Son Jun-ho has been released after being detained in China in connection with a bribery case, according to South Korea’s foreign ministry. Son a player in the Chinese Super League was detained in May 2023 as part of efforts to combat corruption and match-fixing in Chinese football.
China’s foreign ministry had accused Son of accepting bribes. Son who joined Shandong Taishan in China’s Shandong province in 2021 has represented South Korea in 20 matches including the 2022 World Cup. South Korea’s ministry communicated with Chinese authorities during Son’s detention urging a swift and fair resolution to the case.
