Russell Martin the manager of Southampton enlisted his assistant of four years Matt Gill  to preview the team’s FA Cup fourth-round match against Watford. The fixture was moved to Sunday due to international broadcasting selection, altering the team’s training schedule. Gill affectionately known as Gilly joked about Martin’s directive for him to address the press. Gill discussed his coaching journey which includes roles at various clubs highlighting his focus on player development.

Despite briefly managing Martin during their time at Norwich City, Gill primarily serves as Martin’s assistant, supporting him in various coaching capacities. While Gill has been linked to managerial positions, he currently prioritizes adding value to players and staff rather than pursuing head coaching roles. The coaching team emphasizes mutual respect and aims to foster an environment where players can be themselves and enjoy their football.
