Celtic has reportedly received a bid from Atletico Madrid for midfielder Matt O’Riley with the Spanish club showing keen interest after his impressive performance in the Champions League. Atletico has presented a loan offer with an obligation to buy, making them potential front-runners. Although other European clubs including Girona and Inter Milan are interested, Atletico’s recent bid could make them favorites.
The specific fee is undisclosed but Celtic is unlikely to let O’Riley go cheaply given that he signed a new four-year contract in September, having three and a half years remaining. O’Riley’s standout season includes 10 league goals and 12 assists, making him a key player for Celtic.
Despite their potential profit from O’Riley’s sale, Celtic aims to keep him at least until the end of the season as he continues to shine under manager Brendan Rodgers. O’Riley, acquired for £1.5 million from MK Dons in 2022, demonstrated his worth in Europe during the Champions League contributing three assists in the group stage.
