Former Newcastle defender John Anderson criticized the decision not to opt for surgery initially after Sven Botman’s knee injury stating that it has now backfired after the player was ruled out for six to nine months. Botman and the club chose rest over surgery in September, hoping to avoid a lengthy absence from the pitch.

However, Anderson believes that this decision has proven to be detrimental as Botman has not looked like his usual self since returning to action in December. Anderson described Botman’s movements as lacking fluidity and suggested that the gamble to avoid surgery has ultimately harmed the player and the team.

He emphasized that hindsight reveals the error in this decision and questioned the validity of the rest-based rehabilitation plan.
