The official match ball for the upcoming Euro 2024 will feature technology that has not been seen before, capable of sending data to officials in real-time. Fussballliebe will offer insights into each touch it takes, as well as its movement, providing the video assistant referee (VAR) with a significant advantage.
During testing, UEFA claimed that it will expedite the process for officials to make decisions while offering more precise offside decisions. Since the integration of VAR, fans and pundits alike have criticized various aspects of its implementation, including the inability for officials to make correct decisions even with the assistance of such technology.
Fans in the stadium have also voiced concerns about the time it takes for a decision to be made, often leaving them in the dark for a substantial period before the decision is confirmed. The ball will seamlessly work using artificial intelligence (AI) combined with UEFA’s semi-automated offside system to produce the desired outcome.
Fussballliebe will make its debut this summer as Euro 2024 takes place from June 14 to July 14.
