Brentford boss Frank lashes out at FA Cup replay after Wolves draw
Brentford manager Thomas Frank has vehemently criticized the FA Cup replay system, labeling it the “worst outcome in every aspect” following his team’s 1-1 draw against 10-man Wolverhampton Wanderers in the third round of the competition.
Despite enjoying a numerical advantage for over 80 minutes at the Gtech Community Stadium after Joao Gomes’ dismissal, Brentford was unable to capitalize on the opportunity, as Neal Maupay’s first-half opener was canceled out by Tommy Doyle’s impressive solo effort just past the hour mark.
Compounding Brentford’s woes, Christian Norgaard was forced off the pitch with an ankle problem early in the first half. With the club already grappling with an extensive injury list, Frank expressed his discontent at the prospect of adding another fixture to their already congested schedule.
“This is the worst outcome in every aspect,” Frank lamented. “I said it yesterday, I simply don’t understand why we have a replay.”
He emphasized the strain it places on players, particularly in the midst of a demanding season, highlighting the likelihood of facing Wolves again on Wednesday before a clash with Nottingham Forest on Saturday.
Frank questioned the decision-making process behind the replay system, urging the Football Association (FA) to make more sensible choices. He suggested eliminating replays or implementing them consistently across all rounds of various competitions, including the Carabao Cup and European competitions.
The Brentford manager’s comments underscore the growing frustration among football managers and players over the demanding match schedule, which often leads to fixture congestion and increased injury risk. The FA Cup replay system has been a topic of debate for years, and Frank’s criticism adds to the pressure on the governing body to reconsider its approach.
