Since its inception in 1955, the UEFA Champions League has continuously evolved to better serve clubs, players and fans. Ahead of the 2024/25 season, UEFA collaborated extensively with key stakeholders to introduce a new format. This format accommodates 36 clubs in the league phase providing four additional teams the opportunity to compete.

Qualification remains open based on clubs’ domestic league performance and association club coefficient ranking. The knockout phase includes a play-off for teams finishing 9th to 24th ensuring more competitive matches. Similar changes will be applied to the UEFA Europa League and UEFA Conference League enhancing the fan experience and promoting open competition and financial solidarity across Europe.
