UK Culture Secretary Calls for Ban on Transgender Athletes in Elite Women's Sports
UK Culture Secretary Lucy Frazer has urged sports organizations to take decisive action and prohibit transgender athletes from competing in elite women’s sports. Frazer emphasized the duty of sporting bodies to protect the integrity of women’s sports and provide clear guidance on the matter. She referenced the Cass Review which highlighted the need for action in addressing issues related to transgender participation in sports.
Frazer pointed out positive steps taken by individual sports such as cycling and swimming to create separate categories for transgender athletes. Various sporting bodies including World Netball, Fina, the Rugby Football League, World Athletics and the International Cricket Council have implemented bans or restrictions on transgender women participating in women’s competitions.
The Football Association’s policy allows players to apply to compete in leagues corresponding to their affirmed gender, subject to individual assessment ensuring safety and fair competition.
