In contention for a final round charge, McIlroy second shot landed in the water leading to a series of unfortunate events. Despite attempting to play the ball from the water with rolled-up trousers and removed cleat, the ball ended up submerged.

After opting for a drop, a subsequent errant putt added to his woes. Golf fans empathized noting similar experiences but McIlroy now faces a six strokes deficit starting the final round at -7. Shane Lowry, David Skinns and Austin Eckroat lead the tournament.
