Rico Hoey debuts as a PGA TOUR member at the Sony Open.

Rico Hoey, a vibrant 28-year-old golfer from California, made his debut at the Sony Open in Hawaii as a newly-minted PGA TOUR member. Securing his card through the 2023 Korn Ferry Tour after a victory at the Visit Knoxville Open, Hoey exudes positivity, describing himself with the phrase “Vibes are high.” Despite facing challenges and injuries in his early professional years, Hoey turned to mentor and coach Ross Fisher for guidance. Fisher, the director of golf at Goose Creek Golf Club, provided Hoey with a unique job setting up tee markers, fostering a renewed love for the game.

Returning to full-time golf pursuit, Hoey earned Korn Ferry Tour status in 2022 and eventually made it to the PGA TOUR. Reflecting on the challenging times, Hoey expressed gratitude for Fisher’s guidance and the support of his family and girlfriend. His journey, once dark, saw the light, and now he’s fulfilling his dream as a PGA TOUR member.

During his week at Waialae Country Club, Hoey faced ups and downs on the scorecard, missing the cut after a solid opening round. Regardless of the outcome, Hoey’s infectious positivity remained evident. His parents, girlfriend, and Fisher watched proudly as Hoey embraced the experience of playing on the world’s best TOUR. While the future is uncertain, Hoey is savoring the moment, acknowledging that being part of the PGA TOUR is a dream come true.
