Aidan Heslop from Britain and Australia’s Rhiannan Iffland were crowned the 2024 Cliff Diving World Champions after the season finale in Sydney. The event, held once again in Sydney Harbour with views of the Opera House and Harbour Bridge saw the world’s best divers perform their final dives of the season at speeds of up to 85 kph. Men dove from 27 meters while women launched from 21 meters above the water.
Although Heslop finished fifth in the event, it was enough to secure his first-ever world championship title with a total of 121 points, 14 points ahead of second-place James Lichtenstein from the United States. Heslop expressed his joy, saying, “I wanted to finish with a bang, I knew the trophy was very much within reach but to do it with an awesome dive to finish is a great feeling.”
Iffland, who had already clinched the championship in the penultimate leg of the season, won the event in Sydney with a score of 359.70 points. She claimed a record-breaking eighth world title, adding to her impressive career. Canada’s Simone Leathead (325.25 points) and Ukraine’s Nelli Chukanivska (306.90 points) rounded out the top three.
Iffland shared her excitement, saying, “That was a magical moment here, standing up there and getting the crowd going… it was very, very special.” In the men’s event, Ukraine’s Oleksiy Prygorov emerged victorious with a score of 405.80 points followed by Carlos Gimeno of Spain (397.40) and Romania’s Constantin Popovici (366.10).
The event marked a thrilling conclusion to the season with both Aidan Heslop and Rhiannan Iffland cementing their places in cliff diving history.
