Abdi Nageeye and Sheila Chepkirui Win NYC Marathon Titles

Abdi Nageeye of the Netherlands and Kenya’s Sheila Chepkirui emerged as the winners of the men’s and women’s races at the New York City Marathon, each achieving significant milestones in their careers. Nageeye surged past last year’s champion, Kenya’s Evans Chebet, in the final stretch to finish with a time of 2:07:39. Chebet secured second place while Kenya’s Albert Korir took third.

Nageeye an Olympic silver medallist expressed disbelief over his victory, saying, “When I reached the finish, it felt like I was dreaming.” In the women’s race, Chepkirui claimed her first major marathon win, crossing the line in 2:24:35. She finished 14 seconds ahead of 2023 champion Hellen Obiri, with Vivian Cheruiyot rounding out an all-Kenyan podium.

Chepkirui described the victory as highly meaningful, acknowledging the mental and physical endurance it required: “I pushed myself to the limit and am so happy.” In the men’s wheelchair race, American Daniel Romanchuk captured his third New York City Marathon title, finishing in 1:36:31. Britain’s David Weir came in close at five seconds behind with Japan’s Tomoko Suzuki following eight seconds later in third.

Switzerland’s Marcel Hug, who had won 16 straight marathons and was aiming for a fourth New York title, finished fourth. Susannah Scaroni dominated the women’s wheelchair race, winning her second title by a substantial margin, finishing more than 10 minutes ahead of fellow American and five-time champion Tatyana McFadden. Switzerland’s Manuela Schar placed third.

This year’s New York City Marathon featured a competitive international field across all categories with Abdi Nageeye and Sheila Chepkirui adding new chapters to their careers as world-class marathon runners.
