Beatrice Chebet the double Olympic champion capped off a remarkable year by setting a new women’s 5,000m world record at the Cursa dels Nassos road race in Barcelona. The 24-year-old Kenyan completed the race in 13 minutes and 54 seconds, becoming the first woman to break the 14-minute barrier in the event. Chebet, who claimed gold in both the 5,000m and 10,000m at the Paris Olympics earlier in 2024, improved her own record by 19 seconds, set a year ago in the same race.

“I’m super happy as everything went according to plan,” Chebet said after the race. “I felt capable of running under 14 minutes and I managed to do so. Two races in Barcelona and two world records, can I ask for more?” She also shared her focus for 2025, aiming to win gold in both the 5,000m and 10,000m at the World Championships in Tokyo. Chebet raced alone for much of the event, sprinting toward the finish line and celebrating with friends as she added yet another achievement to her extraordinary career.

In addition to her Olympic victories, she set a new 10,000m world record in May in Eugene, Oregon and secured her second Diamond League title in the 5,000m in September. Beatrice Chebet’s 2024 season has been nothing short of historic and her continued dominance in long-distance running has firmly established her as one of the sport’s leading athletes. With her sights set on future titles, she is poised to make even more history in the coming year.
