Charlie Dobson Grabs First Major Medal at Euros

Charlie Dobson clinched silver in the 400m event, securing his first major individual medal at the European Athletics Championships, while Molly Caudery secured bronze in the pole vault. Despite Dobson’s impressive personal best of 44.38 seconds, Belgium’s Alexander Doom claimed gold with a championship record time of 44.15 seconds. Caudery, who was favored for gold, settled for bronze after Switzerland’s Angelica Moser secured a surprise victory by clearing 4.78m. Great Britain’s medal tally now stands at nine, including golds for Dina Asher-Smith and the women’s half marathon team.

In other events, Laviai Nielsen finished sixth in the women’s 400m final with a personal best time of 50.71 seconds, while Anna Purchase placed eighth in the women’s hammer final. Mark Pearce finished 13th in the men’s 3,000m steeplechase final. Daryll Neita advanced to the women’s 200m final with ease, securing victory in the semi-finals with a time of 22.51 seconds. Timothe Mumenthaler won the men’s 200m final with a time of 20.28 seconds. Charlie Dobson, hailed as a rising star by former British 400m record holder Iwan Thomas, impressed despite finishing second, while Molly Caudery expressed disappointment despite her bronze medal.

Laviai Nielsen achieved a personal best despite a challenging week, revealing her coach’s recent health scare. Keely Hodgkinson progressed to the semi-finals of the women’s 800m, along with teammates Alex Bell and Erin Wallace. Neil Gourley advanced to the men’s 1500m final, joined by Adam Fogg. Lina Nielsen qualified for the women’s 400m hurdles final, while Alastair Chalmers narrowly missed out on the men’s 400m hurdles final.
