Eliud Kipchoge to Return for Fifth London Marathon Victory

Eliud Kipchoge, the renowned Kenyan distance runner and two-time Olympic marathon champion will return to the London Marathon in April. At 40 years old, Kipchoge a four-time winner of the men’s race in London, last competed in 2020 and is aiming for a fifth victory this year. Kipchoge described his mid-race drop-out at the Paris 2024 Olympics as “demoralising,” but remains confident in his ability to compete.

He stays focused on his training and is confident in his ability to compete for victory. Additionally, he remains committed to inspiring others and championing the power of sport. The 2025 London Marathon, set for Sunday, April 27, will feature one of the most competitive fields in its history. The women’s race includes world record holder Ruth Chepngetich, Olympic champion Sifan Hassan and silver medallist Tiger Assefa.

Eilish McColgan will also make her debut. In the men’s race, British runner Emile Cairess leads the local charge, aiming to challenge Mo Farah’s British record, alongside Olympic and world triathlon champion Alex Yee. Eliud Kipchoge, widely considered the greatest marathon runner, made history in 2019 by becoming the first athlete to run a marathon in under two hours.

However, that time is not an official world record due to the controlled conditions. His official personal best stands at 2:01:09, the second-fastest marathon time in history. Kipchoge’s impressive career includes 11 major marathon wins including a four-year undefeated streak in London from 2015 to 2019.

He only suffered his first defeat in 16 marathons in 2020, finishing eighth. London Marathon CEO Hugh Brasher hailed Kipchoge as the “greatest marathon runner” and one of the greatest athletes in history. Kipchoge plans to reveal his future racing plans after this year’s London Marathon.
