Fred Kerley, the United States Olympic sprinter was tasered and arrested by police following an altercation on Thursday evening in Miami. The 29-year-old, who earned a 100m bronze medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics faces charges including battery, resisting arrest and breach of the peace. The incident occurred when police were investigating a separate matter and Kerley approached officers with concerns about his car.
According to a police report, Kerley displayed an “aggressive demeanor” and resisted arrest, using evasive movements to avoid detention. The situation escalated, and four officers subdued Kerley. Bodycam footage shows him briefly standing up before police tasered him and he fell to the ground. Afterward, they took him into custody. Local media reported that Kerley appeared in court the following day and secured his release on bail.
His lawyer described the incident as a “total misunderstanding.” Kerley, who also won a silver medal in the 100m at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, ranks among the world’s top sprinters. In addition to his Olympic success, Kerley claimed a gold medal in the 100m at the 2022 World Championships and has earned gold in both the 4x100m and 4x400m relay events.
With a personal best of 9.76 seconds, Fred Kerley holds the sixth-fastest 100m time in history. Despite the controversy surrounding the incident, Kerley’s achievements in athletics remain significant. The misunderstanding in Miami is unlikely to overshadow his successful career on the track where he continues to be a top competitor in the sprinting world.
