Jakob Ingebrigtsen Dominates Diamond League in Lausanne

Jakob Ingebrigtsen delivered a commanding performance at the Diamond League meeting in Lausanne, decisively defeating Cole Hocker, the 1500m men’s Olympic champion. The 23-year-old Norwegian, a strong favorite for gold at the Paris 2024 Olympics, faced a setback in Paris. He finished fourth behind Cole Hocker, Josh Kerr and Yared Nuguse.

However, Jakob Ingebrigtsen showed no signs of lingering issues from that race as he clinched victory in Lausanne with a time of 3:27.83. Hocker finished second in 3:29.85 while American Hobbs Kessler took third. Meanwhile, British athletes also shone at the event. Matthew Hudson-Smith triumphed in the men’s 400m with a time of 43.96 seconds. Initially, he was set to compete against Olympic champion Quincy Hall, who withdrew.

Hudson-Smith reflected on his performance and shared his ambition for the 2028 Olympics. He aims to join legends like Michael Johnson and Jeremy Wariner. Dina Asher-Smith won the women’s 100m with a time of 10.88 seconds. She later led the British team to victory in the women’s 4x100m relay with Bianca Williams, Desiree Henry and Amy Hunt. The quartet finished in 42.03 seconds ahead of Switzerland.

Furthermore, in the women’s 800m, Olympic bronze medalist Georgia Bell came second behind Kenya’s Mary Moraa, who won in 1:57.91. Jemma Reekie, who missed the Paris final secured third place. Moreover, Kenya’s Emmanuel Wanyonyi nearly broke David Rudisha’s men’s 800m world record with a time of 1:41.11. Botswana’s Letsile Tebogo won the men’s 200m in 19.64 seconds.

The biggest surprise came in the men’s 110m hurdles where Jamaica’s Rasheed Broadbell defeated Olympic champion Grant Holloway with a time of 13.10 seconds. Dutchwoman Femke Bol won the women’s 400m hurdles in 52.55 seconds. Looking ahead, the next Diamond League meeting will take place in Silesia, Poland and will air live on BBC Two and the BBC iPlayer from 15:00 BST on Sunday.
