Katarina Johnson-Thompson, a British medal hopeful, has pulled out of the remaining events in the heptathlon at the European Athletics Championships in Rome. Following the shot put, the third event on the opening day, the reigning world champion found herself in ninth place. Her coach, Aston Moore, cited a “small niggle in her right leg” as the reason behind the decision. Moore emphasized the importance of avoiding any risks that could hamper her training in preparation for the upcoming Olympics in Paris, where she aims to secure her first Olympic medal.
Despite winning her second world title just a year ago, Katarina Johnson-Thompson faces a tough challenge from two-time champion Nafissatou Thiam of Belgium. Thiam’s strong performance, particularly in the high jump with a best of 1.95m, widened the gap between them to 318 points after the shot put. Johnson-Thompson’s decision to withdraw was announced before the 200m heats, with the medals set to be determined after the long jump, javelin and 800m events on Saturday.
Thiam, aiming for her third successive European title, faced pressure from compatriot Noor Vidts, with Italy’s Sveva Gerevini also in contention. British athlete Jade O’Dowda’s solid performance in the shot put, along with her earlier events like the 100m hurdles and high jump, has positioned her in ninth place for the start of day two. As she enters the second day of competition, she remains optimistic about her chances of ascending in the rankings. With determination and perseverance, she aims to improve her position and vie for a stronger placement in the event.
