Keely Hodgkinson, the Olympic 800m champion will miss the remainder of the 2024 athletics season due to an injury. The 22-year-old, who had planned to compete in the Diamond League finals in Brussels this September, announced her withdrawal on Instagram, stating, “No more races for me.” Despite the setback, Hodgkinson expressed gratitude for the support she received and noted that she had achieved all her goals for the year.
Hodgkinson had an impressive 2024 season, winning all nine of her 800m races, including clinching gold at the Paris Olympics earlier this month. She also defended her European 800m title and set a new national record with a time of 1:54.61 at the London Diamond League in July. This performance highlighted her continued dominance in the event.
Looking ahead, Keely Hodgkinson aims to break the longstanding 800m women’s world record of 1:53.28 which has remained unbeaten for over four decades. Additionally, she is targeting her first World Championship title at the event in Tokyo in September 2025. She has previously won silver medals at the World Championships in the past two years.
Hodgkinson’s injury comes as a significant blow, as she had been in top form throughout the year. However, she remains optimistic about her future goals and plans to return to competition next season. Her commitment to breaking records and achieving new milestones underscores her determination and talent in the sport of athletics.
