Laura Muir Sets British Record at Paris Diamond League

Laura Muir set a new British record in the 1500m at the Paris Diamond League, clocking 3:53.79 to improve upon her previous mark set during the Tokyo Olympics. Despite finishing third, Laura Muir performance underscores her form ahead of the upcoming Olympics. Faith Kipyegon of Kenya stole the show with a sensational 3:49.04, breaking the world record and signaling her readiness for the Paris Olympics, where she aims for her third consecutive Olympic title. Georgia Bell achieved a significant personal best of 3:56.54 while Katie Snowden finished ninth in 3:58.13.

In the women’s high jump, Yaroslava Mahuchikh of Ukraine made history by clearing 2.10m, surpassing the longstanding record set by Stefka Kostadinova in 1987. Mahuchikh’s achievement cements her status as a top contender for gold in Paris, following her bronze in Tokyo and a strong season. Elizabeth Bird ran a season’s best of 9:09.07 for third place in the women’s 3000m steeplechase, won by Bahrain’s Winfred Yavi in 9:03.68. Laviai Nielsen set a personal best of 50.76s to finish fifth in the women’s 400m, won by Marileidy Paulino of the Dominican Republic in 49.20s.

Looking ahead to the Paris 2024 Olympics, athletes are fine-tuning their preparations with two Diamond League events remaining. Monaco will host the next meet, followed by London on July 20. Meanwhile, at the FBK Games in the Netherlands, Keely Hodgkinson won the women’s 800m in 1:57.36 and Melissa Courtney-Bryant took the 1500m title in 4:03.58. The performances of Kipyegon and Mahuchikh highlight their dominance and readiness for the upcoming Olympics, setting the stage for compelling competitions in Paris.
