Matthew Hudson-Smith Withdraws from Euros for Olympic Prep

Matthew Hudson-Smith, the European record holder in the 400m, has withdrawn from the British team for the European Athletics Championships. Additionally, sprinters Zharnel Hughes, Imani-Lara Lansiquot and Nethaneel Mitchell-Blake have also withdrawn. In a remarkable display of form, Matthew Hudson-Smith recently surpassed his own record during his season opener in Oslo. However, opting to prioritize training for the Paris Olympics, he has chosen to forgo the European Championships.

Although British Athletics has not officially disclosed any details of injuries, observers noted world bronze medalist Hughes limping after his 100m race in Jamaica last Saturday. With Lansiquot absent and Daryll Neita opting to focus on the 200m and the 4x100m relay, Amy Hunt will now compete in the women’s 100m and the relay. Aleeya Sibbons will join the relay squad. The championships in Rome are set to commence on Friday, 7 June, spanning over six days.

The British team also includes world heptathlon champion Katarina Johnson-Thompson and Olympic 800m silver medalist Keely Hodgkinson. However, some notable absences include 1500m world champion Josh Kerr. Reigning 1500m European champion Laura Muir has recently declared her withdrawal from the upcoming competition. Her decision adds to the roster of notable absences, impacting the anticipation surrounding the event.
