Sifan Hassan to Return for 2025 London Marathon

Sifan Hassan will return to the London Marathon in 2025 alongside all four reigning Olympic and Paralympic marathon champions. The event, taking place on April 27 will feature Hassan, who made history by becoming the first woman to win Olympic gold in the 5,000m, 10,000m and marathon. At 32, she won her marathon debut in London in 2023, and later claimed victory in the Chicago Marathon. Reflecting on her journey, Hassan shared how London was where she first ran the marathon and grew both as an athlete and a person.

Hassan will be joined by Olympic men’s marathon champion Tamirat Tola of Ethiopia and Paralympic marathon champions Catherine Debrunner (Switzerland) and Marcel Hug (Switzerland). In 2023, Hassan made a dramatic comeback in London, reeling in top competitors and sprinting to victory after nearly dropping out due to a hip injury. Her triumph in the 2024 Paris Olympics also involved a spectacular recovery after appearing to fade during the marathon, finishing with another thrilling sprint.

Looking ahead, Sifan Hassan aims to run four marathons in one year and pursue personal bests in track events. She plans to challenge herself and push beyond her comfort zone. Tola, 33, will be seeking his first London Marathon win after finishing third in 2023. Hug, 38, will aim for his seventh victory and fifth consecutive win in the men’s wheelchair race while Debrunner, 29, hopes to continue her dominance in the women’s wheelchair race. Both have been dominant in their events with Debrunner holding the women’s wheelchair course record.
