University of Colorado Shaken by Fatal Hammer Accident

University of Colorado Colorado Springs witnessed a tragic incident on Sunday when an athlete’s hammer fatally struck a spectator at a high school indoor athletics event. The hammer, which can weigh up to 7.26kg (16lbs), reportedly cleared certified barriers and hit 57-year-old Wade Langston, the father of a competitor. Langston, who shielded his wife and son from the oncoming hammer, tragically died in the accident. The University of Colorado Colorado Springs confirmed the incident with a spokesperson stating that the hammer bypassed the safety barriers set up for the event, leading to the spectator’s death.
The El Paso County Coroner’s office identified Langston as the victim. In a statement, University Chancellor Jennifer Sobanet expressed heartbreak over the accident and pledged to support everyone affected by the tragedy. “We are heartbroken at this horrible accident and are focused on supporting all involved,” Sobanet said. The Colorado Springs Police Department issued a statement but did not classify the incident as criminal, referring to it as a “non-criminal incident.”
Authorities have not provided further details about the accident, which they are still investigating. This tragic event serves as a stark reminder of the potential risks involved in athletics even in controlled environments. Although the hammer throw sport has specific safety protocols, accidents like this emphasize the need for ongoing safety measures for both athletes and spectators. The community remains in shock as they process the tragic loss of Langston, who attended the event to support his child.
