Taufik Hidayat Steps into Indonesia's Sports Leadership

Taufik Hidayat former world and Olympic badminton champion has taken on the role of Indonesia’s Deputy Youth and Sports Minister in President Prabowo Subianto’s administration. He will work alongside full minister Dito Ariotedjo to shape the nation’s youth and sports policies. Widely regarded as one of badminton’s all-time greats, Taufik first rose to prominence in 1999 when he won his first of six Indonesia Open titles.

That same year, he reached the finals of the All England and Singapore Open but lost to Denmark’s Peter Gade and compatriot Hariyanto Arbi. Throughout his career, Taufik led Indonesia to two Thomas Cup victories and secured three Asian Games gold medals.

In 2004, he claimed the pinnacle of his career by winning the gold medal in men’s singles at the Athens Olympics. A year later, he earned the world title in the United States solidifying his legendary status in the sport. Taufik, once ranked world No. 1, retired from professional badminton in 2013 after an illustrious career.

At 43 years old, Taufik Hidayat now steps into his government role with a focus on bringing his expertise and passion for sports to Indonesia’s youth and athletic programs. His appointment reflects a strategic effort to inspire the next generation of athletes while actively contributing to national sports policy under President Prabowo’s leadership.
