Juan Soto Agrees to Record $765M Mets Deal

Juan Soto is reportedly signing the largest contract in sports history, agreeing to a 15-year, $765 million (£600m) deal with the New York Mets. Sources in the U.S. have disclosed details of the agreement but the Mets have not yet confirmed it as Soto must complete a medical examination. The 26-year-old Dominican star has become MLB’s top free agent after delivering a stellar season with the New York Yankees.

Soto showcased his elite hitting skills leading active players in career on-base percentage (0.421) and ranking among MLB leaders in home runs. In 2024, he posted a .288 batting average, hit a career-high 41 home runs and recorded 109 RBIs in 157 games. During the World Series where the Yankees lost to the LA Dodgers, Soto maintained a .313 average with one home run.

The deal includes a $75 million signing bonus and avoids deferred payments, potentially reaching $800 million (£627m) in total value. This contract surpasses Shohei Ohtani’s 10-year, $700 million (£558m) deal with the LA Dodgers which included deferred payments. The Yankees offered Soto $760 million (£595m) over 16 years to retain him but the Mets outbid them.

The Mets aim for Juan Soto to deliver championship success, as he previously helped the Washington Nationals win the 2019 World Series in his first full season. Soto has played for the Nationals, San Diego Padres and Yankees throughout his career. Over 936 regular-season games, he has hit 201 home runs driven in 592 RBIs and achieved a .285 batting average.

His deal surpasses contracts in other sports including those of NFL stars Patrick Mahomes and Dak Prescott and NBA’s Jayson Tatum marking a landmark moment in professional sports history.
