Orelvis Martinez Faces Suspension: MLB Drug Violation

Orelvis Martinez, a Toronto Blue Jays infielder has received an 80-game suspension from Major League Baseball for violating the league’s doping policy. The 22-year-old Dominican Republic native made his Major League debut just last Friday. However, he tested positive for clomiphene, a fertility drug banned by MLB.

In a statement, Martinez explained that a fertility clinic in his homeland prescribed him Rejun 50, which contains clomiphene, after he and his girlfriend had been trying unsuccessfully to start a family since 2020. Martinez acknowledged his mistake, took full responsibility for his negligence, and accepted the suspension.

Signed by the Blue Jays in 2018 for $3.5 million (£2.8 million), Martinez had established himself as one of the top power-hitting prospects in the minor leagues.

“We were both surprised and disappointed to learn of Orelvis Martinez’s suspension,” said Ross Atkins, executive vice president and general manager of the Blue Jays. “We will do everything in our power to ensure Orelvis learns from his mistake. He has our support, and we are confident he will get through this.”

Martinez’s suspension will keep him sidelined until September. During his absence, Toronto positioned at the bottom of the American League East division with 35 wins and 41 losses will look to regroup and improve their standing in the league.
