Earlier in the game, tensions escalated when Dodgers pitcher Jack Flaherty and Padres baseman Manny Machado exchanged heated words. Machado accused Flaherty of intentionally hitting batter Fernando Tatis with a pitch, a move known as “plunking,” which further inflamed the Dodgers fans. The situation boiled over in the seventh when a fan threw a baseball at Profar as he approached the umpire to report the incident.

Security escorted Profar away from the hostile crowd but fans continued to throw beer at him as tensions persisted. Flaherty condemned the fan behavior, stating, “Fans should never get involved. There’s no reason to throw anything at players, no matter what is going on.” Tatis described the atmosphere as “wild,” acknowledging the emotional investment from fans while appreciating the competitive spirit it brought to the game.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts remarked on the rarity of such an incident, saying he had never witnessed anything like it in his extensive experience attending games. In a decisive turn, the Padres won Game 2 with a score of 10-2, leveling the best-of-five series at one game apiece.
