Shohei Ohtani Makes History with 50 Home Runs and 50 Steals

Shohei Ohtani made baseball history as the first player to achieve 50 home runs and 50 stolen bases in a single season. The Los Angeles Dodgers superstar entered the game needing one stolen base and two home runs to reach this milestone and he delivered spectacularly in a 20-4 victory over the Miami Marlins finishing with 51 home runs and 51 steals. Ohtani started his record-breaking night by stealing third base in the first inning marking the first part of his achievement.

He later recorded his 51st steal and hit his 49th home run in the sixth inning, tying Shawn Green’s Dodgers record for most home runs in a season set in 2001. Ohtani then hit his 50th home run in the next inning solidifying his place in baseball history. Expressing his surprise at the accomplishment, Ohtani remarked, “To be honest, I’m the one probably most surprised. I have no idea where this came from, but I’m glad that I performed well today.”

The 30-year-old Japanese star joined the Dodgers on a record-breaking 10-year, $700 million contract in December making him one of the highest-earning athletes globally. Before this season, Ohtani had played 866 MLB games which was the highest number among active players who had not made a postseason appearance. This changed when the Dodgers secured their 12th consecutive playoff berth.

MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred praised Ohtani, saying, “While Shohei Ohtani has been a groundbreaking player for many years, his latest feat reflects not just his amazing talent. It also showcases his character, drive and commitment to excellence.” He extended his congratulations to Ohtani for this remarkable achievement highlighting its significance in the game.
