At 7 feet 2 inches tall, Mutombo originally from the Democratic Republic of the Congo was discovered while studying at Georgetown University and was selected fourth overall in the 1991 NBA Draft. His warm personality and iconic finger-wagging celebration made him a fan favorite.

He dominated defensively leading the NBA in blocked shots for five consecutive seasons and achieving the highest blocks per game for three consecutive seasons. Following his retirement, both the Hawks and Nuggets retired his number 55 jersey and he received induction into the NBA Hall of Fame in 2015.

Mutombo also served as a global ambassador for the NBA, engaging in humanitarian efforts in his home country and throughout Africa.
