Jayson Tatum, Team USA forward is set to cap off an exceptional year by aiming for his second Olympic gold medal in men’s basketball at Paris 2024. Tatum led the Boston Celtics to the 2024 NBA championship with a 4-1 win over the Dallas Mavericks. He graces the 2K25 cover and signed one of the NBA’s largest contracts with Boston.
Reflecting on his journey, Tatum expressed the joy of representing Team USA and the impact it has on fans. “I remember growing up loving to see the best players on Team USA having fun,” he told BBC Sport. The USA team aims for their fifth consecutive gold and includes NBA stars like LeBron James and Stephen Curry.
They also include rising stars Tyrese Haliburton of the Indiana Pacers and Anthony Edwards of the Minnesota Timberwolves. Tatum noted, “Tyrese Haliburton was in high school when I was in the NBA, so that’s kind of weird,” emphasizing the blend of experience and new talent in the squad.
Tatum also hopes the team can offer a sense of unity and escapism amid the ongoing presidential election campaign. “The Olympics, especially with Team USA basketball, have such a big opportunity to show that we can all come together,” he said.
Despite leading the Celtics to 64 wins and averaging 26.9 points, Tatum faced criticism. The team’s losses in the 2022 NBA Finals and the 2023 Eastern Conference Finals fueled this scrutiny. Reflecting on the scrutiny, Tatum noted that dealing with criticism is part of the process.
“You have to have an outlet,” he advised, adding that basketball, while crucial, isn’t the sole source of happiness. Outside basketball, Jayson Tatum focuses on his six-year-old son, Deuce, who often attends Celtics games. Tatum shared that Deuce will join him in Paris, hoping to witness another gold medal victory.
“Deuce has been with me every step of the way,” Tatum said, cherishing the shared experiences and accomplishments with his son.
