Joel Embiid has officially signed a contract extension with the Philadelphia 76ers securing a maximum three-year deal worth $193 million (£145 million). The 30-year-old Cameroonian center, drafted by the 76ers in 2014, expressed his commitment to the team and his desire to win their first NBA title since 1983. “I started as a Sixer and want to be here for the rest of my career,” Embiid stated, reflecting on his journey from Cameroon to the NBA.

He thanked Philadelphia fans for their support throughout his career, saying, “This city and the fans have been everything to me. Philadelphia is home and it’s time to bring this community an NBA championship.” Embiid moved to the U.S. at 16 to attend the University of Kansas and had an outstanding season last year, averaging 34.7 points, 11 rebounds and 5.6 assists per game.

His exceptional performance earned him the title of 2023 NBA Most Valuable Player. Daryl Morey the 76ers’ president of basketball operations, praised Embiid, stating, “Joel has cemented himself as one of the greatest Sixers of all time and is well on his way to being one of the best players to ever play the game.”

Earlier this year, doctors diagnosed Joel Embiid with Bell’s palsy, a facial condition but he continues to focus on his game and leadership as he aims to elevate the 76ers to championship glory. With this contract extension, Embiid solidifies his role as a cornerstone of the franchise moving forward.
