The game seemed destined for overtime after Collin Sexton’s three-pointer tied the score at 121 with just four seconds left. However, Young responded with a remarkable half-court shot just before the buzzer securing the victory for the Hawks. Trae Young finished with 24 points including 10 in the fourth quarter and 20 assists. Lauri Markkanen led the Jazz with a season-high 35 points.
In other NBA action, Jayson Tatum’s 29 points powered the Boston Celtics to a 118-106 win over the Denver Nuggets. Kristaps Porzingis added 25 points for the Celtics, who remain second in the Eastern Conference. Denver’s Russell Westbrook scored 26 points and grabbed nine rebounds in a losing effort. The Dallas Mavericks snapped a five-game losing streak with a dominant 118-97 win against the Los Angeles Lakers.
Quentin Grimes came off the bench to score 23 points and grab nine rebounds, filling in for injured stars Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving. Anthony Davis led the Lakers with 21 points while LeBron James chipped in 18, as the Lakers dropped to sixth in the Western Conference behind Dallas. Zion Williamson made his return from a hamstring injury for the New Orleans Pelicans but couldn’t prevent a 104-97 loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves.
Williamson scored 22 points but Anthony Edwards led the Timberwolves with a game-high 32 points. Elsewhere, the Charlotte Hornets broke a 10-game losing streak with a 115-104 win over the Phoenix Suns. Nikola Jovic’s 20 points helped the Miami Heat defeat the Golden State Warriors 114-98 while the Houston Rockets triumphed over the Washington Wizards 135-112.
