Caroline Dubois Shines Despite Technical Draw

Caroline Dubois, the British lightweight champion, retained her WBC world title on her 24th birthday in a frustrating technical draw against Canada’s Jessica Camara. The fight held in Sheffield, ended prematurely in the second round due to a clash of heads that left Camara with severe swelling and a cut over her left eye. The ringside doctor deemed the 36-year-old unfit to continue. Dubois dominated the brief contest, showcasing her power and precision.

She floored Camara with a sharp left hand in the first round and maintained pressure throughout the second. Blood streaming from Camara’s cut compounded her struggles with Dubois appearing poised for an early stoppage before the fight was waved off. Despite the disappointing conclusion, Dubois was in control during the four minutes of action, demonstrating the skill and intent that have defined her undefeated career.

Her trainer, Shane McGuigan expressed surprise that the fight didn’t continue past the fourth round where judges’ scorecards would have come into play. Dubois, upgraded to full world champion after Katie Taylor vacated the belt, now seeks a unification bout with WBO champion Terri Harper or IBF titleholder Beatriz Ferreira. McGuigan praised Dubois as “the best female fighter on the planet,” though she still lacks a marquee victory to solidify her stardom.

In the night’s main event, Barnsley’s Callum Simpson successfully defended his British and Commonwealth super-middleweight titles, stopping Steed Woodall in the second round after a relentless display of power. With her dominant performance, Caroline Dubois reaffirmed her status as one of the brightest talents in women’s boxing, despite the unsatisfying outcome. A potential unification fight could provide the stage she needs to cement her legacy.
