Conor McGregor once hailed as Ireland’s sports icon, now faces intense backlash after a Dublin jury found him guilty of sexual assault in a civil case. Nikita Hand, who accused McGregor of raping her in a hotel in 2018, brought the case which resulted in a €250,000 ($208,000) damages award. McGregor, who denies the allegations, plans to appeal the decision. McGregor’s fall from grace follows a broader pattern of legal issues and controversies.

In 2018, police arrested him for throwing a metal dolly through a bus window and a year later, authorities fined him for punching a man in a Dublin pub. These incidents along with his latest legal battle have tarnished his reputation in Ireland, a country that once celebrated him as a trailblazer. After the verdict, Conor McGregor lost significant sponsorships and partnerships. Several retailers in both Ireland and the UK removed products linked to him while Proximo Spirits and IO Interactive announced they would sever ties.

The National Wax Museum in Dublin also removed his figure. McGregor’s career had been marked by his brash persona and success in MMA which resonated with many in post-recession Ireland. However, his behavior shifted after his rise to fame and wealth. His actions including a controversial boxing match with Floyd Mayweather and his infamous loss to Khabib Nurmagomedov in 2018 made him increasingly divisive.

Now, with McGregor’s MMA future uncertain, his fall from grace has left many questioning what will come next for the once-promising sports star. His tarnished image has transformed from a symbol of national pride to one of excess and controversy.
