Floyd Mayweather dominated John Gotti III in their exhibition rematch in Mexico City, despite a mid-fight referee change. The rematch followed their chaotic first encounter in June 2023 which ended in the sixth round with a mass brawl after they stopped the bout. On Saturday night, the fight nearly veered into similar territory when Panamanian referee Hector Afu left the ring in the second round.

Afu became frustrated with Mayweather’s protests over a left hook he landed on Gotti which Afu deemed illegal. Mexican referee Alfredo Uruzquieta then replaced Afu and the fight continued without further incident. Mayweather, 47, controlled the bout while Gotti struggled to mount any significant offense. The 22,000-strong crowd in Mexico City grew restless due to Gotti’s lack of aggression and booed his performance.

Gotti showed some improvement in the fourth round, spurred on by the crowd’s discontent but Mayweather maintained firm control throughout the match. Although Mayweather dominated the fight, officials did not declare a winner, which is typical for exhibition matches. The result does not affect either fighter’s career record. Mayweather retired in 2017 with an unbeaten record of 50-0.

Since then, he has participated in several exhibition fights, including a high-profile match against Logan Paul. Despite the drama, Floyd Mayweather’s superior skills shone through and he easily handled Gotti in the ring.
