Oleksandr Usyk Released After Airport Detention in Poland

Oleksandr Usyk confirmed his release by Polish authorities after they detained him at an airport with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky addressing the situation. Zelensky expressed outrage over Usyk’s treatment and instructed Ukrainian officials to investigate the matter. A video circulating on social media showed Usyk in handcuffs but Zelensky reassured the public that authorities had resolved the issue and Usyk was no longer in custody.

Usyk the WBC, WBA and WBO heavyweight champion plans to travel to London this week to watch Daniel Dubois defend his IBF title against Anthony Joshua at Wembley. In response to the detention, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha and Internal Affairs Minister Ihor Klymenko swiftly acted, demanding details from Polish authorities and calling the detention unacceptable.

Sybiha confirmed Usyk’s release and announced plans to issue a formal note to the Polish government. Usyk’s promoter, Alex Krassyuk called the detention a “misunderstanding” that they quickly resolved. Usyk echoed this, thanking Ukrainian diplomats and Polish police for their professionalism. Despite this, the reason behind Usyk’s detention remains unclear.

Oleksandr Usyk hasn’t fought since May 19 when he defeated Tyson Fury to become boxing’s first four-belt undisputed heavyweight champion. He vacated his IBF title in June to focus on a rematch with Fury scheduled for December 21. Usyk also an undisputed cruiserweight champion remains unbeaten in 22 professional fights with 14 wins by knockout.
