Tyson Fury’s Corner Set for Rematch Without Father John

Tyson Fury’s head coach, SugarHill Steward has indicated that John Fury will not join his son’s corner for the highly anticipated rematch with Oleksandr Usyk on Saturday in Riyadh. Fury, 36, aims for revenge after he lost to Usyk by a narrow points decision in their first encounter last May where John Fury joined Steward and Andy Lee in the corner team. At the open workouts on Wednesday, Steward confirmed that only he, Lee and the cutman would be in Fury’s corner for the rematch.

This news may surprise many especially after the chaotic nature of Tyson Fury’s corner in their first fight. In that bout, both coaches and his father shouted instructions simultaneously, leading to confusion. Tyson Fury had already expressed uncertainty about his father’s involvement in the rematch, stating he didn’t focus on such matters. His assistant coach, Andy Lee also said he was unsure about John’s role.

Earlier this month, promoter Frank Warren stated that he expected Fury Sr. to be in the corner but it now seems that won’t happen. The last time Fury and Usyk faced off, Usyk made history by becoming the first undisputed heavyweight champion in nearly 30 years. However, since then, Usyk has vacated the IBF title for the rematch. Ahead of the first fight, John Fury became involved in a controversial incident where he appeared to headbutt a member of Usyk’s team. As of this week, he hasn’t been seen in Riyadh.
