Ziyad ‘Zizo’ Almaayouf a psychology student switches off the lights and closes the door. He plays a YouTube video titled ‘stadium crowd shouts and chants’ on his phone. With his pro boxing debut approaching on the undercard of Oleksandr Usyk v Anthony Joshua in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, Zizo reflects on the hype surrounding him as one of the first Saudi fighters. He vividly visualizes every scenario, preparing himself mentally for the fight. Despite nerves, his visualization techniques help him stay calm. In reality, his debut is a resounding success with a first-round knockout victory against his Mexican opponent, extending his winning streak to five. Zizo aspires to become the Manny Pacquiao of the Arab world aiming to bridge cultural gaps and change perceptions as a spokesperson for Saudi Arabia.
Born in America to a Saudi father and Egyptian mother, Ziyad ‘Zizo’ Almaayouf discovered his passion for boxing while living in Saudi Arabia. Despite initial reluctance from his parents, Zizo’s father supported his boxing dreams, emphasizing discipline and dedication. Moving to Los Angeles to study, Zizo faced challenges due to Covid-19 lockdowns but found mentorship under former world champion Buddy McGirt. Now, with McGirt as his head trainer, Zizo is poised to make his mark in the boxing world and beyond aiming to promote unity and understanding between Western and Arab cultures. He acknowledges criticisms of Saudi Arabia’s human rights record but remains optimistic about the country’s potential for positive change and unity through sports.
