Charlotte Dujardin Pulls Out of Paris Games

Charlotte Dujardin faced a video released by a whistleblower showing her allegedly whipping a horse “excessively” during a training session. The whistleblower aimed to address what they perceive as widespread issues in dressage, according to the whistleblower’s lawyer. The BBC obtained the video which prompted Dujardin, a six-time Olympic dressage medallist to withdraw from the Paris Games. She was set to compete in both individual and team dressage events.

Charlotte Dujardin, 39, stated that the video displayed “an error of judgement” and did not reflect her usual training methods or values. She expressed deep remorse and acknowledged that her actions were inexcusable. Consequently, the equestrian governing body FEI provisionally suspended her and launched an investigation after receiving the footage on Monday.

Additionally, UK Sport suspended Dujardin’s funding pending the outcome of the investigation. Meanwhile, the horse welfare charity Brooke dropped her as an ambassador, condemning the video. Furthermore, two of her sponsors, KBIS and Equine LTS withdrew their support, citing the video’s contradiction to their commitment to horse welfare.

The whistleblower’s lawyer, Stephan Wensing explained that his client, who wishes to remain anonymous, felt compelled to act to “save dressage,” despite not taking pleasure in disrupting Dujardin’s career. Wensing said the video was from two and a half years ago, showing broader issues in the sport. However, the timing of the video’s release has sparked debate, with some criticizing it as sabotage aimed at disrupting the Olympics.

Amidst these controversies, Dujardin’s withdrawal opens opportunities for other competitors, and the British team will adjust to her absence. Overall, the FEI’s response underscores its dedication to tackling misconduct in equestrian sports. By suspending Charlotte Dujardin and investigating, the FEI shows its commitment to maintaining high standards in equestrian sports.

This approach aims to ensure that the sport remains fair and respectful for all participants.
