Andy Farrell has confirmed that 21-year-old Sam Prendergast will start at fly-half against Australia in Saturday’s Autumn Nations Series match, ahead of Jack Crowley. Farrell explained that Prendergast, who impressed on his debut in last week’s win over Fiji, “deserves” another opportunity to lead the team. Despite Crowley having been Ireland’s first choice since Johnny Sexton’s retirement, Farrell has opted to continue with Prendergast, who showed maturity in guiding Ireland to a 52-17 victory over Fiji even after receiving an early yellow card.
Prendergast, who has only eight senior starts for Leinster, helped secure the win against Fiji with five successful conversions and an assist for one of Mack Hansen’s tries. Farrell praised the young fly-half’s performances in training and believes the experience will aid his development. Crowley, who played every minute of Ireland’s Six Nations campaign and started both summer Tests in South Africa will continue to compete for the fly-half role, with Farrell acknowledging his consistent form over the past year.
Saturday’s match also carries special significance as it marks the Irish Rugby Football Union’s (IRFU) 150th anniversary celebrations. The game will see Farrell face his predecessor, Joe Schmidt, who is now coaching Australia. Schmidt, the most successful coach in Irish rugby history won three Six Nations titles and led Ireland to a historic win over the All Blacks.
Andy Farrell expressed his admiration for Schmidt’s achievements, calling him “phenomenal” and highlighting the invaluable experience he gained while working under him, both with Leinster and Ireland. Farrell also expressed gratitude for the opportunity to celebrate Irish rugby’s history alongside Schmidt.
