Australia moved closer to securing a semi-final spot in the Women’s T20 World Cup after a dominant nine-wicket victory over Pakistan in Dubai. With three wins from three, they sit comfortably at the top of Group A and their high net run-rate means only an unlikely set of results could stop them from advancing. However, injuries to key players Tayla Vlaeminck and captain Alyssa Healy clouded an otherwise comprehensive performance.

After winning the toss, Australia bowled Pakistan out for a meager 82, the lowest total in the tournament so far. Ashleigh Gardner was instrumental taking 4-21, supported by Georgia Wareham and Annabel Sutherland, who claimed two wickets each. Australia’s chase was swift, needing just 11 overs to reach their target with Healy top-scoring with 37 off 23 balls before retiring hurt.

The injuries present a significant concern for Australia. Vlaeminck dislocated her shoulder while fielding early in the match and Healy suffered a foot injury while running between the wickets. Both players’ conditions will be evaluated further with their availability for the rest of the tournament uncertain. Despite these setbacks, Australia’s depth in talent was evident as vice-captain Tahlia McGrath emphasized the team’s ability to adapt in challenging situations.

For Pakistan, their slim chances of reaching the semi-finals hinge on their final game against New Zealand. Their batting struggled, with only Aliya Riaz showing resistance, scoring 26 from 32 balls. Captain Muneeba Ali admitted the team’s performance was below par, calling it “embarrassing.” Australia’s victory while impressive comes with the caveat of potential injury concerns especially for two of their key players.

With a final group game against India ahead, the team will need to rely on its squad depth to maintain momentum.
