Australia secured their spot in the Women’s T20 World Cup semi-finals with a hard-fought nine-run victory over India, who now face uncertainty about their own progression. The defending champions have dominated Group A, winning all four of their matches while India currently in second place must hope for a New Zealand loss to Pakistan to advance. India needing 152 runs to win started their innings aggressively, bolstered by a spirited crowd in Sharjah. Captain Harmanpreet Kaur led the charge with an impressive 54 off 47 balls bringing India to the brink of victory.
However, with 14 runs required in the final over, Australia’s Annabel Sutherland delivered an exceptional performance conceding just four runs while taking three wickets ultimately sealing the win for Australia. Despite missing their injured captain Alyssa Healy, Australia managed to recover from a shaky start, posting 151 runs for eight wickets—their highest total of the tournament. Opener Grace Harris top-scored with 40 runs from 41 balls while Ellyse Perry and stand-in captain Tahlia McGrath contributed 32 runs each.
Australia’s depth and resilience shone through even as they dealt with injuries to key players. Although they started poorly, losing two early wickets, Harris and McGrath combined for a vital 62-run partnership. India initially kept pace, reaching 41 for 2 at the end of the powerplay but they struggled against Australia’s spinners. A promising fourth-wicket partnership of 63 runs between Harmanpreet and Deepti Sharma, who scored 29 off 25 balls, rekindled hopes for India, yet they ultimately fell short.
In the aftermath, McGrath praised her team’s composure while Harmanpreet expressed hope for India’s chances, acknowledging that their fate was now out of their hands. Player of the match Sophie Molineux credited the senior players for guiding the team to victory, emphasizing the importance of teamwork in overcoming challenges.
