Australia dominated the first Women’s Ashes ODI, winning by four wickets with 67 balls to spare, displaying their ruthlessness despite not being at their best. England’s batters fell for 204 on a pitch where the average first-innings score is 277 but Australia still faced challenges, losing six wickets while chasing the total. Australian captain Alyssa Healy, who scored 70, acknowledged that her team could have been more clinical with the bat and aimed to chase the target more quickly.

While Healy pointed out areas for improvement, England’s captain, Heather Knight expressed satisfaction with her team’s performance, believing they were close to competing. Despite the loss, Knight stressed that England was not far from success, citing that 20 more runs could have made a difference. The two teams now head to Melbourne for the second ODI with a demanding schedule ahead including three ODIs, three T20 matches and a Test.

Although England trailed 2-0 after the first match, their fightback in 2023 when they leveled the series after being 6-0 down, suggests they shouldn’t be dismissed. The key difference in this match was Australia’s ability to capitalize on England’s mistakes. England’s senior batters including Knight, Amy Jones and Danni Wyatt-Hodge, got starts but failed to build significant innings.

Meanwhile, Healy delivered a match-winning knock. England’s fielding mistakes, like dropped catches deflated the team and handed Australia momentum. Despite the defeat, England showed promise with Lauren Bell impressing with the ball. However, they need to tighten up because there’s little room for error against a team as formidable as Australia.
