Ben Stokes Supports Jos Buttler Amid T20 World Cup Setback

Ben Stokes has backed Jos Buttler to remain as England’s white-ball captain despite their heavy defeat by India in the T20 World Cup semi-final. The defending champions lost by 68 runs in Guyana, their third defeat in four matches against Test-playing nations. This loss follows a disappointing defense of their 50-over World Cup title in India last year, where England won only three out of nine matches.

“Jos is the man to lead that white-ball team forward,” Ben Stokes told BBC Sport. “He is a great leader and has the respect of all the team members in the dressing room.”

Stokes, who played a crucial role in England’s 50-over World Cup win in 2019 and the T20 final success in 2022, believes the team is progressing under Buttler and coach Matthew Mott. “They have done a great job in getting to another major semi-final,” he said. “It’s not shabby to say you got through to a World Cup semi-final.” England’s journey in the T20 World Cup saw them almost eliminated after a heavy defeat by Australia.

However, wins over Oman and Namibia, coupled with Australia’s narrow victory over Scotland, helped them advance to the Super 8s. Victories against the West Indies and the USA, despite a loss to South Africa, secured England’s place in the last four. However, they were ultimately outplayed by India in the semi-finals. Stokes also compared the criticism faced by the cricketers to that of England’s football team, attributing it to high expectations.

“Unfortunately, it’s the way the English mentality is – they have got through and they are getting a load of grief,” he said.

Stokes prepares for the 10 July Test against West Indies, James Anderson’s final match before retirement. Stokes did not discuss the decision to retire Anderson but praised him highly. He called Anderson an incredible role model and athlete. Stokes, who underwent knee surgery in November, has been recovering well and is eager to return to action. “I’m desperate to get back into it now. I’m buzzing to get going and walking back out in an England shirt,” he said.
