Brendon McCullum and Buttler Ready for Big Challenges Ahead

Brendon McCullum is confident that Ben Stokes will remain fully committed to English cricket even after missing Euro 2024. McCullum, who recently extended his England contract to oversee both the Test and white-ball teams until 2027, praised Stokes’ dedication and highlighted their strong relationship. Despite criticism of former manager Rob Page for not using Stokes in Wales’ Euro 2024 play-off final, McCullum believes Stokes is still driven.

Stokes is eager to contribute and aims for the 2026 World Cup. McCullum’s extended tenure will include leading the next Ashes series in 2027 and major tournaments such as the 50-over World Cup in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia, as well as the Champions Trophy and T20 World Cup. Stokes has expressed his desire to remain Test captain in 2027 and feels motivated by the upcoming global tournaments.

Brendon McCullum also supported Jos Buttler, who will continue as England’s white-ball captain despite a challenging year and recent coaching changes. McCullum encouraged Buttler to enjoy the next few years and embrace the opportunities, emphasizing his status as one of England’s greatest white-ball players. With a packed schedule ahead, McCullum will occasionally miss series, delegate responsibilities to assistant coaches and tour with his family.

England currently focuses on their final Test against Sri Lanka aiming to achieve a clean sweep of the summer series. Newcomer Josh Hull, a 20-year-old left-arm pace bowler will debut despite his modest domestic record, illustrating McCullum’s strategy of investing in promising talent. Sri Lanka has made two changes for the Test, bringing in Vishwa Fernando and Kusal Mendis, as they aim to improve their performance.

The final Test’s weather forecast remains uncertain due to recent heavy rain in south London.
