Captain Ben Stokes praised Shoaib Bashir for his outstanding performance in England’s victory over the West Indies in the second Test at Trent Bridge. The 20-year-old off-spinner took 5-41 and helped England dismiss the tourists for 143, securing a 241-run win and a 2-0 series lead. Bashir became the youngest England bowler to achieve a five-wicket haul in a home Test and the first spinner to do so at Trent Bridge since 2006.
Stokes highlighted Bashir’s talent and drive, saying, “He has got so much talent and an unbelievable desire to get better.” Bashir’s emotional reaction post-match showed the significance of his performance which proved crucial in England’s win. Although England surprised many by selecting him for the winter tour of India with only six first-class matches, Bashir has already claimed three five-wicket hauls in five Tests.
England chose Bashir over Jack Leach, despite Leach’s status as Somerset’s first-choice spinner, reflecting Bashir’s potential. His height and release point, among the highest recorded for a spinner, enhance his effectiveness. Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum admire Bashir’s ability to perform even on pitches that offer little assistance to spin.
Captain Ben Stokes first noticed Shoaib Bashir through a video of him bowling in his debut first-class match against Sir Alastair Cook. This led to Bashir’s inclusion in the England squad, where he has already made a significant impact. Bashir’s 24 wickets in his first five Tests rank third among England spinners since World War Two.
As England prepares for the third Test at Edgbaston, aiming for a 3-0 series sweep, they have retained the same squad. Bashir, reflecting on his debut at Trent Bridge, called the experience “so special” and looks forward to continuing his impressive rise in international cricket.
