Charlie Dean feels England heads into the Ashes with less psychological baggage than in previous years, citing a more confident and experienced squad. The team led by Heather Knight is aiming for its first Ashes victory since 2014, following a thrilling 2023 series draw at home which included iconic wins in both white-ball formats. Dean believes England can build on the momentum from that strong performance, unlike the disappointing 2022 tour when they failed to win a game.
Reflecting on her own journey, Charlie Dean admitted that during the 2022 series, she felt daunted by the prospect of facing Australia, but now, with greater international experience, she feels more confident. She noted that while the team has lost a few players, the current squad doesn’t carry as many “scars” from past defeats. Dean emphasized that big challenges offer opportunities for success and the positivity from the home Ashes series in 2023 boosts their morale.
Both England and Australia are entering the Ashes in strong form, having secured series wins against South Africa and India, respectively, following disappointing T20 World Cup campaigns. Dean also credited the rise of franchise cricket which has helped players adjust to the pressure of playing against Australia on their home turf. With more regular interactions with opponents between tournaments, the intimidation factor has diminished, creating a more competitive and less daunting atmosphere.
England’s only warm-up match before the Ashes opener was rained off after 28.2 overs against the Australian Governor General’s XI. The Ashes series will consist of three one-day internationals, three T20s and a four-day Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, starting on January 11.
